BIOGRAPHY
Arab by birth, Roula Ghalayini, the creative force behind Poupée Couture, was brought up in the West. She entered the world of design back in her home country, Lebanon, where she graduated with distinction from the American University of Beirut, with a degree in Graphic Design.
After graduating, and with an ever present passion for design and fashion in the background, Roula began a career in advertising, where she took on the position of Art Director at Leo Burnett. Her career in advertising quickly advanced from creating corporate identities to eventually holistic image campaigns that went on to win awards in advertising festivals the likes of Cannes, Goldendrum and Epica. After five years of creating and building brands, many of which were fashion related, Ghalayini knew that she was ready to create her own. And so Poupée Couture was born.
In 2012, Poupée Couture was featured in VOGUE in their 100 Best Bags list. Poupée Couture came in at 14 on their list, in between Saint Laurent and Stella McCartney. The brand officially became the 1st Arab accessories brand to make that title.
Today, Poupée Couture is considered an international brand, and has been featured in the Herald Tribune, New York Times, BBC News, Grazia, Cosmopolitan, Wallpaper, among others.
BRAND CONCEPT:
Poupée Couture began as a bit of a parody on the image of the Arab woman—the impeccably dolled up image of a perfectly manicured exterior. A “poupée” so beautiful, yet often hiding so much of her realness underneath. The real inner woman, in the designs and language of Poupée Couture, is only revealed in tiny rays of color, perfectly lined, symmetrically adjacent portions. Segments. Musings. Hints of what lies beneath.
The Arab woman handles the delicacies of context without compromising her individual needs. She both shows and tells, but never simultaneously. She constantly finds ways to push the limits a little further without losing her femininity. She makes her mark, leaving the viewer wanting more.
Color always shines through, either by a material layering or a perforated Arabesque metal. The same way the woman’s ‘true color’ radiates, changes on occasion, but remains ever present.
And has become the Poupée Couture trademark.
