Butheina Kazim is the co-founder of Cinema Akil, an upcoming Dubai-based independent cinema platform. She was a Fulbright scholar of Media, Culture and Communication at New York University (NYU) in New York. Kazim has worked as a project manager in television and radio stations in the UAE at media conglomerates Arab Media Group and Dubai Media Incorporated. Kazim has contributed to publications including Al Jazeera, Gulf News, Jadaliyya and the Art Dubai blog. She has been involved in programming cinema popups including Abu Dhabi Film Festival at The Pavilion Downtown Dubai, Cinema Akil at The Third Line gallery and the Cinema Akil Outbox Short Film Festival in Alserkal Avenue during Art Week 2015. She is the producer of short documentary ‘Letters to Palestine’ winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival (2010) and has been screened internationally at festivals. Kazim was on the jury for the iEmmys Asia & Africa Competition and the International Competition at the Short Film Week (Kurzfilmwoche) in Regensburg, Germany. Kazim took part in the Goethe Institut’s Cultural Management Program for the Arab World in Berlin.
