AMIRA HAROON

TIME: Sunday, 23 October 2016 - 18:30
LOCATION: HALL 3
WEBSITE: http://www.amiraharoon.com/

BIOGRAPHY

An avid traveler and lover of the fine arts, Amira Haroon cites growing up in Saudi Arabia as an important influence on her creative journey as a designer, crediting the region for giving her an opportunity to take from its rich culture and infuse it with her own expression. Later on she studied fashion design at Parsons School of Fashion, Paris. Her wanderlust, along with an abiding love for excellent craftsmanship, vintage pieces and all things Art Deco led to a vivid mood board for what would become the Amira Haroon brand. Having travelled extensively what struck Haroon the most was that women across the globe wanted the same thing as women around her: to be timeless, yet à la mode.

She launched her own label in 2010. Significantly, Haroon is very proud of the fact that her label is made entirely in Dubai. Her signature style fuses modernity with culture, versatility and a decidedly Parisian je ne sais quoi. The Amira Haroon muse is an intellectual gypsy living in a floating world, traveling through time and cultures. Haroon designs for the confident, thinking woman who allows her style to change and evolve with her travels, leaving a lasting impression wherever she goes.

Al Banawi's expertly-tailored suits in graphic prints have been spotted in the pages of Vogue and on street style stars across the world. Designed for "the suitable woman," her aesthetic is subtly androgynous yet undoubtedly feminine.

ZAID FAROUKI

BIOGRAPHY

I have always wanted to become a fashion designer. When it came to the idea of applying to universities and picking my major. I was told that as long as I got a degree in Business I could do whatever I wanted afterwards. So that is exactly what I did, I moved to Washington DC and attended American University and Majored in Business Administration with a Marketing concentration but I always felt that I wasn’t feeding my artistic side. So I enrolled myself in art classes and also added a Studio Art minor, which included painting, sculpting, and multimedia. I also started my own fashion blog zaiddor.com

In my final year in DC I applied to Istituto Marangoni in Milan and I got in. At that point I knew that’s where I was meant to be and what I was meant to do. After receiving my degree in Fashion Design I moved to London and attended Central Saint Martins and took specialized courses in couture techniques and embroidery as well as hand painting. I am currently working on my first collection and launching my brand and my first atelier in Dubai.

With such a global background being as an Arab American as well as being educated in the Italian fashion techniques I found inspiration in the fusion of cultures. Imagining a woman adorned by European clean cuts, true American liberties, and the ever-existent Arab dramatization has helped me to create the globally hybrid woman, a representative of a new globalized world and the woman whom I yearn to design for.
My pieces are all hand made and abide by couture techniques, embroidery, and finishing. Furthermore all my prints are hand painted onto the fabric therefore the wearer becomes a walking piece of art.
