BIOGRAPHY

Alexandra Pisco is the Director of Maisons de Mode, one of Europe’s premier fashion incubators based in Lille, France, that works to develop selected emerging fashion brands and revitalize the area’s textile industry. She also heads Pisco & co., which creates specialized structures and events that aim to develop and promote emerging brands.

Alexandra’s entry into the fashion world began through a multi-cultural upbringing that finally led her to Parson’s School of Design in New York. She began working as a designer for several brands in the US and Europe before launching her own collection, learning the hard way of the realities of the business and economics of fashion. Wanting to learn more about the business side of fashion, she worked in sales at Chanel. She returned to design as a trend and design consultant, first at Promostyl and then at her own agency before being approached by Maisons de Mode. Alexandra is based in Brussels where she lives with her three children.

Barbara Trebitsch is a designer and Head of the Fashion School at Domus Academy in Milan.

She has performed research and been involved in important exhibitions and publications, has been design consultant for important fashion brands and she has established her own prêt-à-porter collection integrating couture techniques.

She has juried many shows and international competitions as well as being a quest lecturer at institutions worldwide that include: Anhebi Morumbi University, Sao Paolo, Brazil; Gifu District, Japan; Borges Cultural Centre, Argentina; Sophya Anthipolis University, France; Lahti Modelinstitutte, Finland; Univesidad Equinocial Bolivariana, Ecuador; Fukui District, Japan; Lineapelle, Italy; Moda In, Italy; Keymung University, Korea; HEAA, Geneve; Dong Hua University, Shanghai; Stroganovsky University, Moscow; Be Next, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Tiblisi.

She has been part of the selection committee for Project Runway-Italy and founding member of the Fashion Colloquia an academic based network promoting discussion and conferences concerning fashion and education, partnering with series in collaboration with London College of Fashion, Parsons School of Design and IFM Paris. As Head of the Fashion School and Director of the fashion programs at Domus Academy, she has worked closely with many important fashion brands, including: Antonio Berardi, Costume National, Napapijri, Nike, 7 For All Mankind, Swarovski, Moncler, Salvatore Ferragamo, Versace, Timberland, Tod’s Group, Swarovski.

Hamdi Kulahcioglu is the General Manager of Tryano,  Chalhoub Group’s new department store concept at Yas Mall. Hamdi joined the company in early 2015 to develop and launch the concept department store dedicated to handbags, beauty and kids.

Graduating from Bosphorus University in Istanbul with a Business Degree and an MBA from Pace University in New York, Hamdi began his career on Wall Street before moving into fashion. With over 20 years of experience in luxury fashion and retail, split equally between US and Europe, he has launched first time concepts such as Harvey Nichols in Istanbul as well as over 100 franchise stores ranging from Ralph Lauren, Tom Ford, Ferragamo and Ted Baker

Khulood Thani
Designer/Founder of BINT THANI

Born and raised in Dubai, Khulood Thani is the first UAE national to hold a degree in Fashion Management and Marketing from ESMOD Paris, the oldest sartorial institute in France. She also studied at London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martins, and received a Masters degree in Strategic Marketing from the University of Wollongong and a B.A. in Marketing Communication from Zayed University in Dubai.

Combining the meticulous skill of a designer with the sharp mind of an entrepreneur, Khulood launched BINT THANI in 2012. The brand quickly became known in the region for its distinctive silk turbans, and most recently for everyday luxury designs that are grounded in Dubai yet have global relevance. Her strong interest in Fashion History and major art and design movements heavily influence the label’s collections.

She works from her experimental studio set in Dubai’s industrial area of Al Quoz, where she also writes about fashion trends for a number of leading regional publications.

Mahmoud Sidani

One of the Middle East’s most prominent male social influencers and bloggers, Mahmoud Sidani, known  as“Mr. Moudz”, began his career at Dubai’s renowned Level Shoe District where he was one of the youngest buyers from the region. He spent three years there honing his skills and travelling to Fashion Weeks and trade shows, documenting his experiences  and personal style on Instagram, His unique laid back style and ability to take streetwear and make it high fashion earned him a big following.

This year, Mahmoud parlayed his social media popularity into his own business, launching a Dubai based fashion consultancy and blog, an extension of the Mr.Moudz portfolio. In 2012, May Barber, an architect and writer based in Dubai, co-founded the cARTel Wearable Art Gallery; a unique concept store and gallery space in Al Serkal Avenue featuring avant garde fashion designers curated under the umbrella of wearable art. Acting as a hidden gem of artistic fashion in Dubai, the cartel continues to nourish the cultural and artistic fabric of Dubai by offering exhibitions, producing art and fashion conceptual films as well as taking part in the international agenda of fashion.

In March 2014, she released the cartel magazine, a bi-annual magazine specialized in conceptual art and fashion where she currently serves as Editor-­in-Chief.

Dubai based Mona Kattan is a well known Iraqi-American beauty entrepreneur. Born and raised in the United States, she moved to the UAE when she was 17 years old. Mona studied finance at The American University of Sharjah and worked in banking prior to her entrepreneurial ventures.  She currently serves as Managing Partner of Huda Beauty. Along with her sisters, Huda and Alya Kattan she launched the Huda Beauty Lash Collection in Sephora Dubai Mall in February 2013, which has gone on to become one of the top selling items in Sephora Middle East. After seeing great demand for their products worldwide, the sisters decided to launch an online portal, shophudabeauty.com, to allow beauty enthusiasts everywhere try their products.

 

Mona is also the Co-Founder of MasterMind PR, The Dollhouse, a full service salon in Dubai, and The Puppet Show. Described as an ‘ambitious Glamourista,’ Kattan has already built an mini empire in the beauty industry at a very young age.

Beirut-born and Dubai-dwelling, Nadine Kanso represents the bi-coastal reality of many Arabs today – a reality that forms her work as both a photographer and Jewelry designer. 

In 2006, Nadine created her Jewelry line, a complementary offshoot to her exploration of Arab identity, ‘Bil Arabi’, taking inspiration from the Arabic alphabet to craft rings, bracelets, pendants and earrings. Using 18-carat gold and embellished with an array of precious and semi-precious stones the Bil Arabi series (which is a literal translation of ‘In Arabic’), the collection is akin to bling bling with a Middle Eastern edge. Since then, Nadine has further developed her work on both fronts with a continued exploration of contemporary Arab identity with various photography exhibitions in Dubai and abroad and the expansion of Bil Arabi across the region and internationally, including Design Miami 2008 where she showcased her Jewelry as part of the Al Sabah Art and Design Gallery. Nadine has also seen her work sold at various auctions including Christie’s Dubai, with a specially commissioned piece during their Jewels and Watches: The Dubai Sale in April 2010.

Raya Aniis an architect and urban designer who has worked in Germany, Boston, New York City and Dubai. In 2015, she was named "Top 40 most powerful Architects in the Middle East" by designMENA. She received her BSC in Architectural Engineering from Baghdad University with distinctions, and an MS in Architectural studies from MIT where she was awarded the Harvard / MIT Aga Khan Scholarship.

 Raya is on the Board of Directors for the American Institute of Architects, a licensed architect in the State of New York and a US Green Building Council Accredited Professional. Raya has designed the first public green school in New York City and two green-certified (LEED) residential towers in Battery Park City. In 2010, she moved to Dubai as the Design Director and Head of Architecture for dwp. In 2012, she founded RAW-NYC Architects in New York City and in 2014 she established the Dubai office. Her research focuses on future living, future cities, economical and social sustainability and the intersection between technology, innovation and sustainability.

Ritu Upadhyay is the Middle East correspondent for Women’s Wear Daily (WWD).

Often referred to as “the fashion bible,” WWD has been the industry voice of authority for the global fashion, retail and beauty communities for over 100 years. Covering the business side of the industry along with trends and runway shows, Ritu has a unique understanding of both the creative and commercial sides of fashion. For the last ten years, she has  reported on new design talent in emerging markets, profiled fashion luminaries like Giorgio Armani, Tom Ford, Christian Louboutin and Elie Saab, as well as traveled to factories across India to report on manufacturing and skilled artisans. 

In addition to WWD, she has covered the Middle East for Bloomberg TV. Born and raised in Chicago, Ritu has lived in New York, India, Jordan and Pakistan, and currently divides her time between Washington D.C. and Dubai.

Saadia Zaid, Creative Strategist and Senior Manager d3

Saadia is a creative and business strategist with over 15 years of experience in the fashion and design sector in UAE and the Middle East. She consults on projects that build cultural understanding and commercial collaboration between the Middle East and American creative industries. With experience across both design and retail operations, Saadia has a unique understanding of all aspects of the industry. She began as a menswear designer, co-founded one of Dubai’s earliest concept design boutiques, 50 Degrees C, and set up Shelter, the first co-working space for entrepreneurs in the region. She recently served as the programming director of Dubai’s largest fashion, art and music festival to date, Meet d3, which attracted more than 300,000 visitors. Saadia recently joined the team at Dubai Design District as a senior manager.

Scott Schuman started his groundbreaking blog The Sartorialist in 2005. Since then his work has been acquired for the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography and has been featured in many monthly publications. In 2012 he was awarded the CFDA Media Award and has published three books of street photography with Penguin. He currently resides in New York and continues to take photographs all over the world.
